We don’t need stories anymore?

After reading Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, how much do you agree with the narrator’s statement that “Modern man has moved beyond the age of the Thousand-and-One-Nights, and modern societies everywhere, whether socialist or capitalist, have done away with the old storytellers—more’s the pity”?

Does the book support this statement?

What are the benefits to storytelling? What are the dangers?
