On superstition

In reading The House Next Door, I think Colquitt Kennedy paints a picture of herself and her husband as thoroughly modern people. Yet when she hears the owl from the lot next door one night, she ties a knot in the corner of the sheet, as her grandmother used to do, telling Walter that if you didn’t, it meant that someone would die. Why do you think superstitions like this persist today? Do you have any superstitions?
