The 19th Wife: wrapping up

July 1, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Thanks for reading David Ebershoff’s The 19th Wife with me! If you’re interested in reading more books like this one, here are a couple of ideas.

If the dual narrative, historical fiction or mystery aspect of The 19th Wife appealed to you, try:

Possession: a romance by A.S. Byatt

Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay

Mathematics of Love by Emma Darwin

Brigham’s Day by John Gates

If you’d like to read more about Mormons and polygamy, try:

Under the Banner of Heaven: a story of violent faith by Jon Krakauer

Escape by Carolyn Jessop

Shattered Dreams: my life as a polygamist’s wife by Irene Spencer

Stolen Innocence by Elissa Wall

Effigy: Mormons, polygamy, taxidermy, love by Alissa York

Wuthering Heights: more like this

April 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Thanks for reading Wuthering Heights with me — the book was much more interesting than I thought it would be, and while I wouldn’t call it a great romance in the traditional sense, I really liked the gothic feel to it. If you’d like to read more books like Wuthering Heights, try one of these:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy

Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier

A Spell of Winter by Helen Dunmore

A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick

Watch for tomorrow’s post — a new book to read with me in May!

Thanks for reading The House Next Door with me

November 3, 2008 · 1 Comment

Thanks for spending the month of October reading The House Next Door with me. Overall, I really liked the characters and the setting and I believe it has stood the test of time pretty well. My only complaint is the epilogue, which really struck a false note with the point of view shift and a truly unnecessary final scene. The effect reminded me of that same final, tacked-on ending in Ann Patchett’s Bel Canto.

If you would like to read more stories about  haunted houses, try:

The Haunting of Hill House (also known as The Haunting) by Shirley Jackson

The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne

A Winter Haunting by Dan Simmons

The Dwelling by Susie Moloney

The Year of Past Things: A New Orleans Ghost Story by M.A. Harper

An American Haunting by Scott A. Johnson

Ammie, Come Home by Barbara Michaels
